Bangkok Vantage Points – Sukhumvit’s Ghost Tower

We didn’t have much hopes to get in, which made it an even bigger surprise when the guards did let us in after we begged the owner of the building for permission over the phone.

“It’s very dangerous up there, no elevator, no fences and lots of things to trip over” The guard said to us. But we reassured him that we had experience with this kind of thing before and would take care that no one gets hurt.

“Ok then!” He said with a heavy sigh.

“The staircase is over there”

We all looked at each other with a big smile.

“I can’t believe that they just let us in!”

“It’s all because of Paew’s negotiation skills” I replied whilst looking at her.

We began to scale the pitch dark staircase up to the 34th floor. It had just stopped raining and the water was dripping down from the higher floors lending to the already ominous atmosphere of an abandoned building.

A DARK ROOM ON THE LOWER FLOORS

“Careful its pretty slippery” Aman shouted from a floor or two above us.

I regretted wearing a pair of sneakers as they quickly soaked up all the water that had filled the area between the unfinished steps. On top of it, the temperature was unbearably hot and humid, which made our climb the more exhausting.

A couple floors up we emerged into an area that would have been the lobby. We took a quick break and photos before continuing further up the structure. With each floor we went up the view across the city became increasingly more dramatic, but we had to race against time as the sun was already setting behind the horizon.

TAKING A SHOT

Out of breath and soaked in sweat we finally made it to the top.

“Wow” I said out loud. “We made it! – And look at that view!”

We spent at least two hours on the top until everyone got their money shot, before we made our way down.

“Don’t talk to anyone when you go down” Paew whispered.

“Who?” I asked baffled.

“The Ghosts of course!” She replied dead serious.
