Bangkok Vantage Points – MahaNakhon Light Show
“No sir, we don’t allow anyone up there” the security guard replied. “Thanks anyway” I returned with a smile and walked out of the building into the searing heat of downtown Bangkok. “Let’s try that building” I thought to myself, and started walking to the next high-rise on my whilst checking Google Maps on my phone.
I had been trying all Saturday afternoon to find a good vantage point to take photos of the MahaNakhon Tower, which was about to open next Monday with a spectacular light show to officially become Thailand’s highest skyscraper.
Drenched in sweat and truly exhausted I walked away from yet another building which turned down my request to rent a space on their rooftop for our meet up group.
However as the sun was about to set, I noticed a flashing light in the corner of my eye that seemed to come from the MahaNakhon building itself. “They are practicing” I exclaimed excitedly to myself and waived down the nearest motor taxi driver. “To United Center Tower please.” I said to the driver. “U-Ni-Ted what?” He replied. “It’s ok, just drive and I’ll tell you where to stop.”
Ten minutes later I was in the elevator going up to Cloud 47. “Are you open tomorrow night?” I tried asking whilst still breathing heavily. “Yes we are!” The receptionist replied. “How about Monday night?” I followed up. “Sorry we will be closed on Monday for a private event.” she replied quietly. “Thats what I thought” I told her with a big smile. “So lets make a reservation for 15 people for tomorrow night instead! Oh and can we have a seat right next to the railings?”
Twenty four hours later, the twelve of us were all set up and ready, to shoot the light show from one of the best spots in the city. And in the end the practice run turned out to be even better than the actual show. “Scouting Locations is actually pretty fun” I said to myself after everyone happily left with great shots in their bag.
